The Dean of ChristChurch Cathedral, the Reverend Lynda Patterson, has died.
The Anglican Diocese of Christchurch says Ms Patterson, who was 40 years old, died at home of natural causes after a recent illness.
She was officially appointed as dean in November last year, having acted in that role for the previous 20 months since the former dean, Peter Beck, moved into local body politics.
In a statement the Bishop of Christchurch, Victoria Matthews, said Ms Patterson was highly respected across the diocese.
Ms Matthews said the community benefited from her preaching and teaching, and she brought compassion and humour to every situation.
