Teacher struck off for abusing students

10:38 am on 30 July 2014

A teacher who physically and psychologically abused year nine students has been censured and deregistered.

The New Zealand Teachers' Disciplinary Tribunal said the man hit, kicked and swore at misbehaving students - aged about 13 - in 2011 and 2012.

The tribunal's decision said in one case the assistant science teacher kicked a student to the ground, and punched the child in the face.

It said he encouraged and took part in students' fights, and made them sit at a so-called ugly desk.

He also read out the teenagers' addresses in class, to show he knew where they lived if they complained.

The teacher admitted the misconduct and has been deregistered and censured.

He must also pay for half of the investigation and an undecided amount towards the prosecution costs.
