Three roads closed because of flooding in the Wairarapa town of Martinborough have re-opened, but several roads in south Wairarapa remain closed.
State Highway 53 at the Waihenga River bridge, Dalefield Road near Carterton and Ponatahi Road reopened on Monday morning. Pukio West Road, Pahautea Road and Kahutara Road remain closed.
MetService says the southerly front that brought the heavy rain to Wairarapa has moved north to Hawke's Bay and Gisborne.
Meteorologist Stephen Glassey said says parts of Gisborne recorded more than 50mm of rain on Monday morning and up to 180mm was expected by this evening, though the heaviest falls are likely in the ranges. The rain was expected to ease at night.
