Former teacher accused of indecency

12:03 pm on 4 August 2014

A former teacher has been accused of performing an indecent act in a classroom of a well-known Auckland school.

The man denies the charge and has interim name suppression, though media are prevented from reporting the reasons for the suppression.

The man's teaching certificate has been suspended and he is no longer working.

Police say they have five witnesses, including two eyewitnesses.

Police prosecutor Joon Yi told the Auckland District Court that police officers who went to the classroom would give evidence, and there was also a police interview.

The accused's lawyer, Richard Earwaker, said there was every possibility his client will give evidence.

The man is on bail and his case is due back in court later this month.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of two years' jail.
