Caravan fire death ruled accidental

An Invercargill woman who died in a fire in her caravan had gone back to sleep due to the sedative effect of the alcohol and cannabis she had consumed.

A coroner's report released on Tuesday said Teresa Anne Thompson died in the early morning of 16 March this year, after returning from a two-year anniversary memorial at Bluff, marking the sinking of the fishing vessel Easy Rider.

CJ Devonport said the 45-year-old was aware of the fire and had removed burning items from the caravan but returned to it and fell asleep.

The cause of death was found to be accidental, as was the fire, which was most likely from a lit candle.

Four people in an adjacent house where the fire spread to were also hospitalised with smoke inhalation.
