Several bowls clubs in Auckland could benefit from the multimillion-dollar sale of a closed-down club in Remuera.

The Rawhiti Bowling Club has been sold for $8.1m to an investment company, which plans to make an upmarket retirement village.

The club closed last year after one hundred years because of dwindling competition players, volunteers and finances.

The club's president, Rod College, said the money from the sale was more than was generally expected.

"That's the beauty of the tender process, a good agent and a lot of interest in real estate in prime areas," he said.

"To be honest, I think we probably thought around six or seven million. Some people had ideas where it might be more and some possibly thought it was less. Personally, I was pleasantly suprised."

Mr College said the money would go back into bowls in Auckland, most likely to other clubs.
