A New Zealand woman volunteering in Papua New Guinea is in hospital after being shot in the leg while sleeping.

Cathy Franzoi, from Waihi Beach, was working as a volunteer ambulance officer in Port Moresby when she was shot above the kneecap on Sunday night.

Her husband Rodney Franzoi said the bullet came through the window, bounced off a window frame and deflected off a bed frame into her leg.

He said she suffered a flesh wound and luckily the bullet hadn't hit any bones or arteries.

Mrs Franzoi was transferred to Cairns on Monday for medical treatment because of a lack of medical equipment in Port Moresby. She hopes to return to New Zealand in the next few days.
