A coroner's report has found faulty ski equipment to be the most likely cause of death of a Swedish man who died on Aoraki-Mount Cook.
Magnus Sigurd Josef Kastengren, a professional skier, died while skiing with his friend Carl Fransson after sliding 600 metres down a steep, icy face towards Hooker Glacier on 3 November last year.
A report by Coroner David Crerar says evidence from Mr Fransson suggests that the likely cause of death was a faulty ski binding.
Mr Crerar said it is possible that Mr Kastengren made a mistake while skiing, but given his experience, an equipment failure was most likely.
The Coroner recommended that equipment be checked by a friend before embarking on high-risk activities.
