Lawyer over-charged on legal aid

A lawyer has been censured and ordered to repay more than $1300 in over-charged legal aid bills, as well as costs of $36,000.

Charl Hirschfeld has pleaded guilty to 12 charges of negligence after sending 17 invoices to Legal Aid Services which contained mistakes.

The Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal found that Mr Hirschfeld incorrectly billed the Legal Services Agency and overcharged by $1368.

He had also sent bills before being assigned to the case.

Mr Hirschfeld was ordered to contribute costs of $16,000 to the tribunal and $20,000 to the Law Society.
