New housing deals for Tauranga

5:19 am on 17 August 2014

Housing Minister Nick Smith has signed agreements with two councils which aim to provide an extra 1175 homes in the Tauranga area.

The Tauranga City Council and Western Bay District Council have joined the Housing Accord, which speeds up planning and consenting processes for homes.

Tauranga has some of the most unaffordable houses in New Zealand and current house build rates do not match the population growth.

Dr Smith said they were increasing the supply of land to deliver an extra 1175 houses.

He said the move should encourage developers to provide affordable homes.

One of the first suburbs to see the new housing developments is Omokoroa.
