They say the man was already on the run from the police.

The first police knew about it was when a burglary was reported at a house in Whitmore Street in the small town, which is near Te Awamutu.

Detective Senior Sergeant Daryl Smith said when police arrived the offender took off on foot, showed a firearm to the officers who were after him, and then stole the family car.

They are calling for any sightings of the silver, 2003 Honda Accord station wagon, registration GJE237.

They say people should not approach the car or its occupants.
