IPCA investigation of Hope Smart case seen as an injustice

A man who complained about the police handling of the disappearance of Olivia Hope and Ben Smart, says the ings of an independent review are the biggest injustice of the 1998 case.

The pair went missing in Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds on New Year's Eve in 1997. Their bodies have never been found.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has investigated complaints by journalist Keith Hunter and Chris Watson, the father of Scott Watson, who was convicted in 1999 of their murders.

The IPCA found the investigation was conducted reasonably and rationally, apart from three aspects which it says had no significant bearing on the outcome.

Keith Hunter says the authority's investigation is a disappointment.

He says it was supposed to have investigated the police, and should have consulted others, instead of just looking at the police records on the inquiry.

Olivia Hope's father, Gerald, also says the families of the missing pair should have been consulted by the IPCA.
