Police have named a man they believe is the most likely killer of a couple murdered in South Auckland a year ago.

Glenys Stanton, 47, and Trevor Waite, 51, were shot dead inside Mr Waite's Opaheke home in August last year.

Within days of the killings, Mr Mowatt - a former partner of Ms Stanton - was considered a suspect.

But the 51-year-old died after apparently taking his own life as he was approached by police in Woodhill Forest, north of Auckland.

A police spokesperson said he would be charged with two counts of murder if he was still alive.

The Auckland Crown Solicitor has reviewed the case and said the case against Mr Mowatt was was strong.

The police said their investigation had been completed, and the deaths of Ms Stanton and Mr Waite had been referred to the coroner.
