Zeb McCallion faces two charges of using a firearm against a member of the police force, and one of being armed with a sawn-off shotgun and assaulting a woman with intent to rob her.

He has also been charged with two counts of stealing vehicles, and one of driving recklessly.

The 35-year-old and an officer were wounded after a weapon went off during a struggle following a police chase that ended in the carpark.

Police say Mr McCallion tried to hijack a car from a woman parked at the supermarket's petrol area. He was wanted by police after a home invasion in Kihikihi on Sunday morning.

The man has been remanded without plea to reappear next week.
