Body removed from Far North house

4:55 pm on 3 September 2014

Police have removed the body of a man from the ruins of a house destroyed by fire in the Far North.

The house in Mangamuka burned to the ground on Sunday night, following a lengthy stand-off between a man inside and police.

Armed police went to the house after they were told about a gun being fired in a trespass dispute. They negotiated with a man inside for more than 14 hours, until a fire broke out.

Police then tried to enter the house to save the man but were forced back by a series of explosions.

The Defence Force bomb disposal unit has been at the scene, dealing with ammunition and guns found there.

A pathologist and a forensic dentist have also been working onsite.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out on the man's body in Auckland this afternoon, and his name has still not been released.

Police say several guns have been found in the burnt-out wreckage of a Far North house where a man died during a lengthy armed standoff.

A pathologist and a forensic dentist have been assisting in a scene examination at the Mangamuka property, in what police say is a painstaking process.
