Police have removed the body of a man from the ruins of a house destroyed by fire in the Far North.
The house in Mangamuka burned to the ground on Sunday night, following a lengthy stand-off between a man inside and police.
Armed police went to the house after they were told about a gun being fired in a trespass dispute. They negotiated with a man inside for more than 14 hours, until a fire broke out.
Police then tried to enter the house to save the man but were forced back by a series of explosions.
The Defence Force bomb disposal unit has been at the scene, dealing with ammunition and guns found there.
A pathologist and a forensic dentist have also been working onsite.
A post-mortem examination has been carried out on the man's body in Auckland this afternoon, and his name has still not been released.
