Sex offender avoids indefinite jail term

A repeat sexual offender has narrowly avoided being jailed indefinitely.

Peter Linton, 68, was sentenced in the High Court in Wellington today on 28 charges to which he had earlier pleaded guilty.

They included 13 charges of sexual conduct with a person under 16 and nine of indecencies with boys aged between 12 and 16.

Justice Collins said Linton had been jailed previously for similar offending and he is deemed to be at risk of further offending.

The judge sent Linton to prison for eight years, saying he would have to serve at least four before being eligible for parole.
