The Southern District Health Board decided six weeks ago that the heated Otago Therapeutic Pool would close in December to avoid paying for a $1 million upgrade, and annual running costs of $100,000.

But public concern has resulted in a $50,000 grant from the Bendigo Valley Foundation to pay operating costs for six months.

Dunedin City Council has loaned the same amount to assess what the needs to be done to keep the pool open.

The DHB welcomed the funding and approved the pool staying open until June next year.
