Asteroid expected over New Zealand

2:55 pm on 6 September 2014

NASA says a newly discovered asteroid the size of a house will pass very close to Earth tomorrow morning.

The 18 metre space rock will soar directly over New Zealand, 40,000 kilometres away, on its closest approach to the earth shortly after 6am.

The asteroid will not be visible to the naked eye, but amateur astronomers should be able to see it with telescopes.
