Pair on trial over Nelson shooting

9:18 am on 9 September 2014

Two men charged after a fatal shooting in Nelson almost five years ago have gone on trial at the High Court in Wellington.

Blair McNaughton, 29, is accused of murdering 22-year-old Anthony Troy Minto at a Nelson park. Isaac Crawford, 24, is charged with Mr Minto's manslaughter.

Crown prosecutor Jackson Webber told the jury today that tension had been building between two groups of Nelson men and on 14 November 2009 it came to a head in the Nelson park.

One of the men in Blair McNaughton's group brought a gun to the fight and the brawl ended with Mr McNaughton shooting Troy Minto in the chest at close range.

A jury of five men and seven women has been chosen to hear the trial. Justice Collins told jurors the case has been tried before, but their decision must be made based on what they hear in court during this trial.
