Climb to rescue injured man in Otago

4:25 pm on 10 September 2014

Two rescuers climbed through the night to reach a climber hurt in a fall near Mount Aspiring in central Otago.

The 57-year-old man, who was with his wife and son, suffered chest injuries.

Police say the Rescue Coordination Centre was alerted about 10.30pm last night after the family activated a locator beacon.

Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said poor weather prevented a helicopter from landing so two Search and Rescue personnel climbed from below French Ridge Hut to the site.

He said once the weather cleared, a helicopter was able to land.

The injured man was flown to Wanaka Medical Centre about 8am this morning.
