Police say a guard will tonight remain at the scene of a stabbing near the Wellington city centre today.

The incident happened about 4pm in the carpark at the Pukehinau Flats at the bottom of the Brooklyn Hill. Large numbers of police cars and an ambulance rushed to the scene.

The scene will be guarded overnight.

Animal nurses and a vet provided emergency help until the ambulance arrived and took the seriously injured man to hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said he is in a serious but stable condition tonight.

Witness Annelies Vorderhake said she heard people shouting in a carpark near where the man was stabbed. She said there were often people arguing and yelling in the area and did not think much of it, but then she heard "this big man yelling and screaming."

Police said a guard would remain at the site overnight and a further scene examination could be carried out tomorrow.

They say the offender is still at large, but not believed to be a threat to the public.

Police are also looking into the case of a man found in nearby Newtown with blood on his face. They were investigating whether the incidents were connected.
