Solar flare could disrupt internet

1:38 pm on 13 September 2014

If you have trouble with your phone reception or internet connection today, it just may be the sun's fault.

Scientists said two big solar flares could cause a geomagnetic storm on Earth in the coming days, and New Zealand might feel the effects as early as today.

The phenomenon might also cause colourful auroras in polar regions, including south of New Zealand.

Royal Astronomical Society spokesperson Haritina Mogosanu said the flares could interfere with satellites and radio signals.

"If New Zealand is turned towards the sun at the time when the flare reaches earth then it can totally affect our communications.

"But since the network of satellites around the world is interlinked, anyway, it could be that New Zealand is effected even if it's not turned towards the sun."
