Housing New Zealand says a 71-year-old Auckland man charged with murdering his elderly neighbour was known as a quiet man who maintained a tidy home.
This week a High Court judge ruled Zijad Garibovic had dementia, so was unfit to stand trial for the murder of Roy Eric Lowe in the suburb of St Johns in April.
Justice Lang said Garibovic was a risk to the public and remanded him to a secure psychiatric unit where he is likely to remain for the rest of his life.
Housing New Zealand said the only complaint it received during Garibovic's five-year tenancy was when he confronted a caregiver in a parking dispute.
It said it was not its role to provide social services.
