Eight people have been reported as having minor injuries.

The fire service, police and ambulances were called to the scene at 3.10pm this afternoon.

Fire Service area commander Dave Berry said the crash happened in a chain reaction set off by the school bus, with a camper van and a four-wheel drive also involved.

"The bus has hit the tanker, the driver's been dislodged and then the bus has careered down the road, well, gone down the road, and has hit the camper van and has then hit a lamppost, lighting pole."

Mr Berry told Checkpoint one of the sixteen students on the school bus was flown to Christchurch Hospital but nobody had been seriously hurt. The student is said to be in a "comfortable" condition in hospital.
