Police are praising one of their newly-graduated constables for putting his own life at risk to rescue a woman who had jumped into the Waikato River.

They say officers were talking to the distressed woman on the Cobham Drive bridge at 11.30pm last night where she jumped 15 metres into the river.

The recently-graduated constable raced down to the river, swam out, and grabbed her.

The police say the pair were picked up by a police boat and taken to Waikato Hospital.
