Up to 70 firefighters were called to Northcote College, where the blaze destroyed a block of three classrooms in which carpentry, and graphics were taught.

Northcote College principal Vicki Barrie said students from a number of year groups had kept projects in the block.

"Senior students are at the end of their NCEA courses, and so there will have been significant amounts of work in that block."

She said the school had already contact NZQA regarding the destroyed work, and the school would guided by them regarding the process they require.

Assistant Area Commander John Booth said there may have been leftover sawdust in the old rooms.

But the fire service said the cause of the fire was not yet known, and an investigator will continue working on the site today.
