Pledge to restore Hauraki Gulf

4:19 pm on 29 September 2014

Auckland's deputy mayor Penny Hulse is vowing to implement upcoming recommendations aimed at restoring the Hauraki Gulf to environmental health.

A new report says fish stocks are depleted, toxic chemicals are still leaking into the ocean, and new species of invasive pests are appearing throughout the area.

The report comes from the Hauraki Gulf Forum, a multi-agency advocacy group including local councils, tangata whenua and the Department of Conservation.

A set of recommendations from it is due by the end of 2015.

Ms Hulse says the Auckland Council's commitment to the Gulf is absolute, and if she has her way, it will implement all the recommendations.
