Accused people smuggler loses appeal bid

The Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal by a man the Australian authorities want extradited to face people-smuggling charges.

Maythem Kamil Radhi is charged in Australia with attempting to smuggle a group of people from Indonesia to Australia in 2001. He moved to Auckland in 2009.

Australian Federal Police police allege he helped organise the journey of the Siev X that sank en route from Indonesia to Christmas Island with the loss of 353 lives, the ABC reports.

His fight against extradition has already been through the District and High courts and the Court of Appeal in New Zealand, with the most recent decision that he should be returned.

Maythem Radhi's lawyers wanted the Supreme Court to reverse that but the court has refused to hear the appeal.
