Two Fiji nationals who obtained residence by falsely stating that they each lived with their New Zealand spouses have been sentenced.
At the Auckland District Court yesterday, Imraan Khan was sentenced to 20 months' jail, while Berlinda Williams received 12 months' home detention.
The pair had earlier admitted to providing false and misleading information to Immigration New Zealand.
In 2008, Williams applied for residence, stating in her application that she had been living with her husband for over a year. Her application was then granted.
Khan applied for a work visa in 2010, stating a connection to Williams.
After further investigation Immigration New Zealand found that, despite both being married to New Zealand citizens, neither had ever lived with their spouses.
