Man charged over Huntly death

6:37 pm on 2 October 2014

An 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of a man in Huntly, in North Waikato, last night.

The man's body was found at the back of a house in James Henry Crescent just before 8pm, after reports of a brawl. He had died from stab wounds.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Whitehead said police were still trying to establish what happened and would not say if it was gang related.

"There's no obvious reason for what happened from what we know to date," he said.

"Our inquiries will continue tomorrow. We're hopeful that with community help we'll be able to understand more about the reasoning behind what at this stage seems to be a senseless loss of life."

The arrested man will appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow morning.
