Police are working to recover the body of a man who died while cycling near Lake Ohau in the Mackenzie Basin, yesterday.

The 65-year-old was reported missing just after 8pm when he did not return from a ride on the Alps-to-Ocean trail.

The man had left Lake Ohau Lodge just before 4pm yesterday to ride a historic woolshed at Quailburn.

A search and rescue squad was called out when he failed to arrive.

At about 10.45pm a searcher found his body down a small bank about 1.5km from the lodge.

Search and rescue members remained with the body overnight, and were waiting for others to arrive and help with its retrieval.
