A South Island whale watch excursion has won a tourism award considered the travel industry's equivalent to the Oscars.

Whale Watch Kaikoura has won Australasia's Responsible Tourism Award at the World Travel Awards held in New Delhi, India, yesterday.

The company is owned and operated by Kati Kuri, a sub-tribe of the South Island's Ngai Tahu tribe.

The company's general manager, Kauahi Ngapora, said the award was a strong endorsement for the Kaikoura-based operations' focus on sustainable tourism and environmental protection.

At the same awards, Air New Zealand was named Australasia's Leading Airline for the sixth year in a row.
