Strong quake hits lower South Island

An earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude has struck the lower South Island region.

GeoNet says the quake which occurred about 6.15pm was centred 115 kilometres west of Tuatapere.

A manager at Emergency Management Neil Cruickshank said the quake lasted about 20 seconds and was more of a rolling motion than a sharp jolt.

He said it was likely to have been felt through much of the Southland area and possibly in parts of Otago.

Police said no reports of damage were received.

A 4.4 magnitude quake followed just before 6.30pm, centred 85 km west of Tuatapere.
