Police say a man has died and a number of people are thought to be seriously injured after a car accident in South Canterbury this afternoon.
Two cars were involved in a head-on crash on the Orari-Rangitata Highway just north of the Orari township about 2.30pm.
A police spokesperson said a man from Timaru died at the scene and three others have been taken to Timaru Hospital by ambulance.
The spokesperson said emergency services and the Serious Crash Unit are at the scene and diversions are in place at Racecourse Road and Orari Station Road.
People are being asked to avoid the area and diversions are expected to be in place for sometime.
