Fine messy campers $200 - proposal

Messy campers in Wellington could be fined hundreds of dollars under a proposed change to the city's bylaws.

The Wellington City Council's environment committee has voted unanimously for a ban on camping in central city parks and suburban reserves, as well as introducing $200 fines for misbehaving campers.

The environment portfolio leader, Helene Ritchie, said people who broke the rules would get a warning before being fined.

"People who are leaving their own, as it were, personal rubbish or their litter or, if they damage the flora and fauna in any way, there are rangers who will be warranted and they would be able to give people an instant fine."

Ms Ritchie said the bylaw would go out for public consultation before the final vote, and the committee hoped to have the changes in place this summer.
