Public health officials say people should avoid Te Wairewa, also known as Lake Forsyth, until the warning is lifted.

The Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, Dr Alistair Humprhey, said the algal bloom produces toxins that cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, and numbness around the mouth and fingertips.

He said people should not drink water from the lake, even if it has been boiled, and fish caught there should also be avoided.
