New Zealand population grows

1:01 pm on 22 October 2014

New Zealand's population has grown by the highest rate for 11 years.

In provisional figures out today, Statistics New Zealand said the population grew by 67,800 in the year to June.

That's a 1.5 percent increase and the highest growth rate since 2003.

It almost doubles the 0.8 percent rise of the previous year.

The largest share of that gain came from net migration, with many more people returning or staying permanently or long-term than people leaving.

The birth rate was a smaller source of population growth, and was in fact the lowest since 2005.

In regional terms, Auckland and Canterbury dominated that growth, but all regions except the West Coast grew overall.
