A Hauraki Plains man shot by police on Tuesday night remains in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital.
The 50-year-old was shot a number of times after fleeing a domestic incident in the rural settlement of Kerepehi.
Police said after the his car was stopped on State Highway Two, he fired shots at police officers, who returned fire, hitting the man.
He was flown to Waikato Hospital and was operated on yesterday.
A scene examination was carried out yesterday at the site of the shooting and also at a property in Kerepehi.
Police said they would continue to speak to witnesses today.
