Police said the man fired at them after his car was stopped at a roadblock following a domestic incident at Kerepehi, and officers returned fire.

The officer overseeing two investigations into the incident, Detective Inspector Mark Loper, said the man had been operated on twice since the shooting, but he would not comment the man's injuries or what charges may be laid.

Mr Loper said the police still wanted to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard what occurred.
