Paramedics are praising the efforts of a teenage boy who swam into the surf at a beach near Gisborne to rescue a 12-year-old girl swept out by a rip.

St John Ambulance said the family group from Auckland was swimming at Wainui Beach when the girl was taken out to sea at 6:45pm.

It said an older teenage relative swam out to rescue her in surf 1 metre high and managed to get her back to shore before the ambulance arrived.

The girl was taken to Gisborne Hospital for medical checks and was distressed, but otherwise unharmed.
