Review into prisoner bus break-down

3:04 pm on 31 October 2014

A review into a bus break-down that left prisoners stuck on the Desert Road in January, has recommended updating procedures and some staff training.

The bus was carrying 20 prisoners, including two with a maximum-security classification, from Springhill Prison in Waikato to Rimutaka Prison in Upper Hutt.

The Corrections Department review said there were some communication issues between staff and the emergency response team.

It said there were also concerns prisoners could escape, but the risk was well-managed by staff, with the support of police.

Corrections said most of the recommendations had been implemented.
