Kawau Island is off the coast of Martins Bay, north of Auckland, from where the two fishermen disappeared in mid-October.

The body of one of the men, Stewart Atutahi, was recovered soon afterwards in the Kawau Bay area.

But the second man, Nicholas Stubbs, was not found and the search for him was scaled back just over a week ago.
