Police officer injured in dog attack

7:12 pm on 4 November 2014

A police officer has undergone surgery and is likely to still need more after being attacked by a large dog while on duty.

A taser was used on the animal after it attacked the officer, who was trying to arrest a man for a family violence matter in Tokoroa on Saturday.

The police said the policeman was with two other officers, and the dog attacked when the man at the property resisted arrest.

The officer sustained injuries to his leg and remains in hospital.

A police spokesperson said it was not clear what breed of dog attacked him, but it was described as a large mixed breed and is now impounded.
