The bomb was found this morning by a man who was clearing ivy at the Albert street property, situated in an industrial area.

He brought it to the police station wrapped in plastic just before 11am which prompted the building's evacuation.

Senior Sergeant Nick Dobson said two Defence Force officers had taken the grenade which was no longer a threat.

"They were able to immobilise the ordnance, the grenade, they have now taken possession of that item and it will be disposed of in due course."

Mr Dobson said police had found other potentially dangerous items at the property but confirmed they were not grenades.

The police station has now re-opened.
