Firefighters have battled a 2000 square metre scrub fire that broke out near the Marsden point oil refinery in Northland.

It started at about 8.15 pm last night and fire crews left the scene at about 10.30 pm after bringing the fire under control.

Five fire trucks and two water tankers battled the fire off Sime Road in Ruakaka.

It was a busy night for firefighters, who were called from there to a blaze at a plastics factory in Dargaville.

Twelve fire engines were called to Robertson Plastics in Dargaville at about 9.30 pm.

A fire service spokesperson said it took about two hours to get the fire under control.

Three people were treated by ambulance staff for smoke inhalation at the scene.

A fire crew stayed at the scene overnight in case of flare-ups. A fire safety officer will today start to investigate the cause of the blaze.
