Trips dip on Wellington's cable car

The head of Wellington's Cable Car is defending the attraction despite ticket sales falling by almost 100,000 in the past financial year.

The total number of rides dropped from just over 1 million to 956,000.

Chief executive Simon Fleisher said things are improving with ticket sales up every month for the past six months.

He said fewer tourists, a difficult economy and ongoing construction work costing about $2 million drove last year's drop in passengers.

Mr Fleisher said more cruise ships are expected to dock in Wellington next year, which will mean more tourists riding the cable car.
