Risk to boaties from old Catlins bridge

9:46 am on 16 November 2014

Boaties in the Catlins in south Otago are being warned about travelling below an old bridge.

The wooden Hina Hina bridge across the Catlins River, south of Owaka, which was built in 1923, has been restricted to light vehicle traffic for about five years as it slowly deteriorates.

The Clutha District Council said the bridge had been inspected and had been confirmed as safe, but there was a risk of falling debris to people travelling beneath it.

It said it had had reports of vehicles weighing more than five tonnes breaching the restrictions, and it might have to close the bridge if that continued.
