Large-scale arrests on Coromandel peninsula

More than 230 people were arrested overnight on the Coromandel Peninsula during New Year's Eve celebrations.

Police say 155 people were arrested in Whangamata for offences such as breaching liquor bans and disorder.

There was a spree of wilful damage along the main street in Whitianga. Thirty-eight people were arrested there for disorder and liquor charges.

A similar number of people were arrested at Waihi Beach.

Other places too

Police were also busy overnight in parts of Northland.

In Paihia, there were dozens of arrests, many for breaching liquor bans and disorderly behaviour.

Fourteen people were arrested in Whangarei, mostly for assault and disorderly behaviour.

Police in Nelson have made 59 arrests since Thursday. They are also investigating three reported rapes and a stabbing.
