Thunderstorms and more heavy rain are forecast for the Southern Alps and the West Coast, while Wellington and the lower North Island are in for gale force winds on Sunday.
Up to 250mm of rain is expected to fall in the Southern Alps.
MetService also says northwest gales are expected to hit inland parts of Canterbury from late morning, and Wellington from late afternoon.
The Tararua Range and Mt Taranaki will experience heavy rain towards the evening.
