Students push immigration up

7:04 pm on 24 November 2014

More people from India studying in New Zealand have pushed annual immigration to an all-time high.

New Zealand recorded its highest ever net gain of 47,700 people in the year to October.

Students from India more than doubled to nearly 8000 from the previous year while students from China rose by 25 percent to just under 4,300 on the year before.

Chair of Independent Tertiary Institutions, Feroz Ali, said foreign students were more attracted to New Zealand because of the Government's promotion of the sector abroad.

Mr Ali said the decline in the New Zealand dollar was also attracting foreign students.
